It's not only a great place to live but a fantastic place to visit as well. Bel Air got its start back in 1780 when the area was first planned. Just two years after its founding it became the county seat. Originally called Belle Aire, the E was dropped and the second L and its companion E gave way a few years later. The town has grown over the years and is currently the center for governmental, educational, cultural, medical, and commercial institutions throughout Harford County.
Bel Air includes one Maryland 24 designated arts and entertainment district making up nearly 100 acres including most of downtown. This area is popular for concerts, galleries, museums, venues, and events. For nearly 150 years, Bel Air has remained where people shop, eat, live, and work in Harford County. It's a great combination of rich history and new generation. With tree lined sidewalks, new and old architecture, small businesses, unique restaurants, and family-owned opportunities, this hometown experience offers big city convenience in a small town package.
One of the most popular events is the Maryland State BBQ Bash attracting over 30,000 visitors across the country. This is the county's most anticipated event of the year and offers a unique street festival with barbecue championships, 50 teams throughout the mid-Atlantic area competing for the sum of the best barbecue in the nation, team challenges, tailgate challenges, great food, music, and people all coming together for one fantastic weekend in Bel Air Maryland.

A lot of chain stores and eateries in the main part of town, but mostly small businesses and shops along Main Street. Lovely people and more diversity than what existed 20 years ago. Great place to raise a family!"
